Mariano Garcia was the winemaker responsible for putting the prestigious Vega Sicillia on the winemaking map and catapulting the now famous region of Ribera del Duero DOC into stardom. However after 30 years tenure he left to set up a new venture just outside Ribera del Duero with his son Alberto and the result was Bodegas Mauro, which now produces itself some of Spain’s greatest wines that are revered throughout the world. The winery occupies an attractive 17th century house in the centre of Tudela – a town whose winemaking tradition goes back to the 16th century and the reign of Philip II who exempted the inhabitants from taxation on account of the quality of their wines!
Mariano and his son Alberto work their 35 hectares together and adopt some rather interesting techniques in the vineyard management so as to maximise the quality of their fruit. One such measure is the use of a single Muscat vine at the start of each of the rows of vines in the vineyards. Due to its fragile nature the Muscat variety is prone to disease and so thus plays the same role in the vineyards as the canaries played down the mines – a sort of natural early warning system. The Mauro Crianza is made primarily from the Tinto Fino grape (the Duero version of Tempranillo), with small additions of Syrah and Grenache to add greater complexities. A deep ruby red colour with a nose full of dark cherries, spice and chocolate the palate is balanced harmoniously with the silky smooth fruit flavours and supple tannins.
