Trinity Hill 'The Gimblett' 2006 - Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

Trinity Hill 'The Gimblett' 2006 - Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
Bin No. THGIMBLE06
Price: £15.50
The Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels 'The Gimblett' is a composition of the five traditional varieties of Bordeaux, led predominately by the Merlot grape (57%), Cabernet Sauvignon 17%, Petit Verdot 15%, Cabernet Franc 6% and Malbec 5%.

Hand-picked fruit was de-stemmed without crushing into closed-top tanks for fermentation, with each grape variety being vinified separately. Daily tasting determined the optimum time to press the skins; the whole vinification process tailored to make the tannins accessible.

After a brief settling period to clarify the wine, it was put into small oak barrels, predominantly French, of which 40% were new. Regular three-monthly racking followed to clarify the wines. After some 18 months in barrel, the individual components were assessed and then blended. The final blend was bottled in Decenber 2007.

The Trinity Hill Gimblette Gravels 'The Gimblett' is elegant, powerful and concentrated. The mouth-filling structure and fine grained texture confirm the potential of this region for the production of world class Bordeaux-style red wines.

Since its inception in 1985 the Planeta winery has, in a relatively short space of time, established itself as one of the most dynamic and quality orientated wineries in the whole of Italy.

The fact that the estate is based in the south west corner of Sicily – an island which for so long has been a quality winemaking backwater – makes the achievement all the more remarkable. Run by cousins Fr
