Agricola Punica Barrua 2005 - Sardinia, Italy

Agricola Punica Barrua 2005 - Sardinia, Italy
Bin No. BARRUA05
Price: £36.50
The grapes for Agricola Punica Barrua are sourced from two distinctive vineyard sites at Barrua and Narcao. Barrua supplies mostly the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes from old bush vines, whilst Narcao is planted mostly with the Carignano grape.

The vines are planted in a dense concentration, limiting the yield of each individual plant and increasing the concentration of flavour in the ripe bunches, which are all harvested by hand. At the winery the whole bunches are de-stemmed and crushed into open concrete fermenting tanks where they are left for a few days to macerate with the skins before fermentation begins.

Ageing of Barrua is in French Alliers barrique, of which one third are new, one third are second fill and the final third are third fill. Maturation in barrique lasts for 18 months, at which point only the finest barrels are selected for blending.

The final blend of Barrua is allowed a further ageing period of 12 months in bottle before shipping, ensuring that it is ready to open and enjoy on release.

The 2005 vintage of Barrua has been awarded the coveted Tre bicchieri accolade. The following are notes on this vintage from the Gambero Rosso:

85% Carignano
10% Cabernet Sauvignon
5% Merlot

"A great Mediterranean wine with outstanding notes on the nose, from ripe red fruits to sweet spices and tobacco. The palate is perfectly in tune with the nose and has a smooth impact well balanced with tannins. Taste progression is very good thanks to the freshness and the clean dynamic finish. Tre bicchieri very well deserved."

Located in Colchagua, a sub valley of Rapel, the Vina MontGras’ vineyards are planted 192km west of Santiago and are naturally protected by the coastal range to the west and the Andes Mountain range to the east.

Considerable investment over the past decade and the arrival of winemaker Sven Bruchfeld - formerly of Errazuriz – have allowed the wines of Montgras to grow from strength t
