In 1986, Marqués de Riscal decided to try making a super-premium wine using only the finest grapes from their oldest vineyards. The trial was a success and Barón de Chirel became a catalyst in the development of a whole new era for Rioja styles. Production is on a very limited scale and only in the best vintages is this fine red wine made.
Since 1995 the grapes for the Barón de Chirel have been selected by hand ensuring only the best grapes are used. After fermentation the wine is aged for 20 months in American oak barriques and then finally the wine spends at least a further year in bottle before being released for sale.
A blend of 85 % Tempranillo and 15% other varietals the Barón de Chirel red wine from Marqués de Riscal is a powerful wine with rich aromas of ripe fruit, spice and liquorice; soft and silky tannins on the palate. On the palate the wine is powerful, with good tannins, yet its elegance shines through. It has a long, fresh finish and is easy to drink thanks to its balanced acidity and great finesse.
