The 2007 vintage for Iona wines was an excellent vintage with a long cool, dry ripening period, unaffected by the January / February heat wave in the Cape; the grapes were harvested over 10 days in mid March in perfect condition.
The white wine, Iona 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, was made at Iona’s own cellar by winemaker Niels Verburg; a larger than life character who at 6 ft 5 inches and 17 stone is a good match for Andrew Gunn who grows the grapes. Niels, who was trained in South Africa and has made wine in Chile, Australia, New Zealand and France, also makes his own Luddite Shiraz in the Iona cellar.
The final Iona Sauvignon Blanc white wine has a wonderfully aromatic nose showing fine mineral notes, hints of herbs, leaves and a touch of gooseberry fruit. The palate is extremely well balanced with classic sauvignon characters of gooseberry and grapefruit and a long, fine finish.
Iona Sauvignon Blanc continues to receive many accolades on the world stage from respected wine commentators such as: Matthew Jukes - “Raise your glasses, because Andrew Gunn, proprietor of Iona, has finally decided to do the right thing and seal his celestial wine with a screwcap. Iona is now complete.”
Spurrier's Choice (Steven Spurrier) Decanter, February 2006:
"Iona, at Grabouw near Elgin, is South Africa's coolest vineyard, and this stony Sauvignon blanc shows pure vineyard fruit, modest (12.5%) alcohol, balanced acidity and a bone-dry finish, whose precision of flavour compared with many more exotic offerings from the Cape, is remarkable." |
