The home of Fairview wines is a 300ha farm on the south-west-facing slopes of Paarl Mountain, in the heart of the Paarl wine district. Fairview has been planted with vines since 1699, but the family of the current owner, Charles Back, has owned it since 1937.

Charles has been the driving force behind Fairview for the past two decades, taking it from a Paarl based winery - that tried to grow various different varieties on the estate - to a winery that now matches varieties with different soils and climates, across all 350 hectares of vineyard, better than anyone in South Africa.

As a result of his vision and commitment to quality Charles now has the grape varieties Mourvedre, Grenache, Tempranillo, Barbera and Sangiovese planted in Malmesbury; Sauvignon Blanc planted in the cool climate Darling Hills; Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in Stellenbosch and Pinotage, Viognier and Shiraz planted in Paarl.

Charles Back's enthusiasm for Italian varieties has lead to the development of the Agostinelli label, which is reserved for a Barbera, a Sangiovese and a blend. These wines are among the most convincing examples of these varieties outside of Italy.

Along with Fairview, the Agostinelli wines attest to the dynamism of Charles Back.

If you happen to be in South Africa, Paarl is a 45 minute drive from Capetown, and Fairview has a superb restaurant that makes it one of the most visited wineries in South Africa.
