The Mathieu family has been growing grapes in Avirey-Lingey, in the heart of the Côte des Bars, for seven generations. They own 12 hectares of vineyard, and used to sell their grapes to négociants until Serge decided, in the 1970s, to make his own Champagne. Today Serge Mathieu is run by Serge’s daughter, Isabelle Mathieu, and her husband, Michel Jacob.

The vineyards have an average age of 23 years, and are comprised of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. Being growers, they work hard in the vineyard to produce the best possible grapes. In a region where the ‘scorched earth’ approach to viticulture is not uncommon, it is refreshing to see that cover crops are used in Mathieu’s vineyards.
