Thornbury Wines was established in 1997 with the express intention of creating a selection of quality New Zealand wines to inspire wine lovers around the world. The image of the dancing piper which adorns the label of each bottle of wine is that of Dionysus, Greek God of Wine.

The distinctive Thornbury wines label is intended to represent a quality mark for the very best in varietal and regional excellence that New Zealand has to offer; for example white wine in the form of Chardonnay from Gisbourne and red wine in the form of a Pinot Noir from Central Otago.

In 2005 Villa Maria, New Zealand’s largest family-owned wine producer, bought Thornbury wines enabling the winemaking team to utilise the Villa Maria winery in Marlborough as a base for making these excellent varietal wines.

The Thornbury Pinot Gris is made from fruit predominantly grown in vineyards of the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. The vines in these vineyards are planted on the north facing slopes in the warmest areas of Marlborough.
