Piemonte The origins of the Gaja's in Piedmonte go back to 1856 when the family opened a small tavern in the town of Barbaresco and began serving their own wines to complement the food. The subsequent success of the winery has much to do with the exceptional continuity provided by the four generations of Gaja's which have presided over it. Angelo joined the family business in 1961, instigating great change. He stopped buying in grapes, reduced yields, identified his best Barbaresco vineyards and began to vinify and bottle them seperately. He also introduced small oak barrels for ageing and much to the horror of his father, he planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Angelo remains committed to his native Piedmont and to making wine in the village of Barbaresco. It is his single vineyards, made predominantly from the Nebbiolo grape, that his reputation for making some of the world's greatest wines has been built.

	Gaja Barbaresco 2000 Bin No. GAJABARB00 Price: £80.00 One of Italy's great red wines, Barbaresco, the historic flagship of the Gaja family, is produced from pure Nebbiolo from fourteen different parcels of vines in the villages of Barbaresco and Treiso. 	Gaja Rossj-Bass Chardonnay 2005 Bin No. GAJABASS05 Price: £21.00 This Chardonnay comes from two four acre vineyards planted in 1984: Bass (as it is slightly lower lying) and Rossj, named after Angelo’s younger daughter, Rossana. From 1991 vintage, grapes from a twelve acre vineyard in Serralunga have also been added to the blend. 	Gaja Sito Moresco 2001 Bin No. GAJASITO01 Price: £21.00 A 25 acre vineyard in Treiso, bought by Gaja in 1978. The wine is a blend of Nebbiolo (35%), Merlot (35%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (30%). Each variety is vinified separately, and then blended before the malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged in barriques for 18 months and in bottle for 6 months before release onto the market.
