Gaja - Piedmont

Gaja - PiedmontPiemonte

The origins of the Gaja's in Piedmonte go back to 1856 when the family opened a small tavern in the town of Barbaresco and began serving their own wines to complement the food. The subsequent success of the winery has much to do with the exceptional continuity provided by the four generations of Gaja's which have presided over it.

Angelo joined the family business in 1961, instigating great change. He stopped buying in grapes, reduced yields, identified his best Barbaresco vineyards and began to vinify and bottle them seperately. He also introduced small oak barrels for ageing and much to the horror of his father, he planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Angelo remains committed to his native Piedmont and to making wine in the village of Barbaresco. It is his single vineyards, made predominantly from the Nebbiolo grape, that his reputation for making some of the world's greatest wines has been built.

Whitehaven wines was formed in 1993 by Greg and Sue White, and winemaker, Simon Waghorn. Their aim was to establish a winery in Marlborough producing premium quality varietal wines. To achieve this they have brought together a leading New Zealand winemaker, a dedicated group of growers, and a small modern winery facility where top quality fruit can receive the 'hands-on' treatment that i
