The name Lafite is synonymous with the great wines of Bordeaux, yet what is less well known, is that for the past twenty years, Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite (DBR-Lafite) has been using its passion for winemaking, to establish top-quality vineyards in other parts of the world. Argentina was one of those countries in which this famous estate elected to concentrate their efforts.
The idea of forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite and the famous Catena family of Argentina was first mooted in 1988. Initial enthusiasm quickly became a concrete plan to produce a single wine that would combine French and Argentine cultures and the two signature grapes of each producer, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The success of the first vintages of Caro – 2000 being the inaugural vintage - encouraged DBR-Lafite and the Catena family to create another premium wine, this time a Malbec-dominated cuvée, that would nevertheless be a balance between the Bordeaux and the Argentine styles. To celebrate its Andean origin, the wine was named Amancaya, after the mountain flower which grows in the Andes and 2003 was its first vintage.

Amancaya is a blend based on the elegant texture of Cabernet Sauvignon (45%) enhanced by the fruit of the indigenous Argentinean Malbec(55%). The conditions in spring and beginning of summer were excellent for the 2004 vintage. The weather in late summer was very hot and dry, with a strong ‘Sonda’ wind blowing from the Andes, which arrested the ripening process on certain plots of Cabernet Sauvignon at lower altitude.
