Fernandez Rivera

Fernandez RiveraZamora & La Mancha

Having created Tinto Pesquera and Condado de Haza in the Ribera del Duero, Alejandro Fernández, and his wife Esperanza Rivera, turned their attention to one of Spain’s oldest winemaking regions – the province of Zamora. They bought the estate in the Spring of 1998 – a ranch of some 1,800 acres which actually produced wine from the 17th to the 19th century but during the 20th Century became more famous for the breeding of fighting bulls. Having bought the estate and planted 525 acres of old-clone Tempranillo as well as installing a new state of the art winery, Alejandro discovered a number of plots of old ungrafted (ie.pre-phyloxerra) Tempranillo vines, which now form the basis of his new wine Dehesa La Granja.
In addition to his efforts at Zamora Alejandro also purchased an abandoned winery in 1999 close to the station in Campo de Criptana, La Mancha, which had last been used for wine-making during World War II. He immediately set about the process of renovating the winery and the vineyards and has now released his second vintage. The wine takes its name after his early childhood gatherings with family and friends at his fathers medieval subterranean bodega high above the hills of Pesquera. This convivial gathering place, affectionately called ‘el vínculo’ (the union) recalls Alejandro’s earliest introduction to wine.

Dog Point Vineyard

Marlborough

James Healy and Ivan Sutherland left Cloudy Bay in 2003 after many years service as winemaker and vineyard manager respectively, to make wine from Ivan’s Dog Point Vineyard.

The name Dog Point is derived from the scrub covered hill, overlooking the Wairau Plains, designated by the early European settlers as a place where shepherds’ dogs who had got lost, or wandered off, took refuge. They
