Hungary

Despite having a two thousand year history, Hungarian wines are still relatively unknown within the UK market place, especially so, if you choose to venture beyond the cheap and cheerful end of the wine market which has graced the supermarket shelves for the past generation!

The main reason for this was the years of communist rule the Hungarian wine producers suffered, however, since the fall of the Eastern block the wine industry has been able to invest heavily and keep up with modern Western methods.

With the history of wine-making heritage, climate, topography, established vineyards etc, foreign investment has been easy to attract and with a fascinating mix of indigenous grape varieties such as; Furmint, Harslevelu, Irsay Oliver, Kékfrankos and Kadarka, along with the more commercial styles of Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot Noir, Hungary has at last been able to establish its own style of quality wines on to the world stage.
