The Meseta | Wine Region

The Meseta region of Spain is an enormous wine producing region that is home to the wines of La Mancha (DO) and Valdepeñas (DO) amongst others, and it is also home to the world’s most widely planted white grape variety, the Airén; a grape that produces rather unspectacular wine but is distilled for the production of Brandy de Jerez!

Almost two-thirds of all Spain’s vineyards are planted on the arid plains of this vast central plateau, and yet until just a few years ago, it was considered that nothing of quality could be made here. However, with huge EU investment and foreign buyers recognising the potential to be had, a broad range of grape varieties including Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah have been introduced alongside the vast plantings of Airén.

Today, eight of Spain’s eleven estates that have earned the prestigious DO Pagos Classification, are to be found in The Meseta and some outstanding wines are now being made here.
