Roberto Voerzio Barolo Vigneto La Serra 2001 - Piedmont, Italy - Voerzio’s La Serra Barolo is made from a single vineyard of just 1.5 hectares grown at an altitude of 320 metres. The vines are fertilised manually using exclusively organic substances (composted manure with vegetable substances) and harvest is by hand. After fermentation the wine is aged in wood. Part is in Slovenian casks of 15hl and 20hl for a period of 20 to 24 months. The remainder is aged in barriques of which 50% is new oak for 18 months. The final Barolo blend is very rich with an excellent colour. On the nose the perfumed Nebbiolo displays classic blackberry, raspberry and liquorice notes. The palate has excellent structure and well balanced acidity that compliments the rounded fruit flavours which have a long perisient finish.

Fontanafredda Barolo di Serralunga d'Alba 2005 - Piedmont, Italy - The Le Selezioni Fontanafredda Barolo di Serralunga d’Alba, is named after the village where the vineyards are located - part of which are owned by Fontanafredda, while the others are of suppliers who traditionally sell their entire grape production to the company. The wine spends a period of time in large oak casks (70%) and barriques (30%) prior to bottling, which is then followed by a further period of maturation which depends on the vintage; though this never lasts less than six months. The Fontanafredda Barolo di Serralunga d'Alba is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. Blood red with ruby highlights this red wine has a clear-cut intense nose with overtones of vanilla and spices. The palate is dry, but soft, full bodied, velvety and well balanced, and is engagingly complex throughout the lengthy finish.

Tenimenti Fontanafredda Barolo Lazzarito Vigna La Delizia 2001 - Piedmont, Italy - The 8.20 hectare 'La Delizia' vineyard, in the village of Serralunga d'Alba, is without doubt the most prestigious vineyard on the Fontanafredda estate, producing a Barolo of great structure and long life. The vineyard is located approximately 400 metres above sea-level with a south/south-westerly exposure. After fermentation the wine is transferred to Allier oak barrels of which 50% are new. The wine stays in barrels for around 12 months and is then racked into medium-small oak casks holding 2000 and 3000 litres to continue maturing for another year. This further refines the tannins without increasing the wine’s woodiness, achieving the right balance between the aromas of the grapes and the wood. The wine is then clarified using egg-whites if necessary to round off any remaining rough edges and obtain a perfectly clear product. Finally the wine is bottled, and stored in the cellar for around a year prior to its release. The Fontanafredda Lazzarito Vigna La Delizia is ruby-red in colour with garnet highlights, it has a sumptuous bouquet, with clear-cut overtones of ripe plums, tobacco, liquorice, dried mushrooms, nutmeg and white pepper. The palate is very dense and closely-woven tannins add softness and balance.

Tenimenti Fontanafredda Barolo Vigna La Rosa 2004 - Piedmont, Italy - It is the wild roses that bloom on the house walls which have given their name to this vineyard (Vigna La Rosa), which is about 250 metres above sea level in the area of Serralunga d'Alba. The Tenimenti Fontanafredda Barolo Vigna La Rosa is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes which are fermented in large vats at a controlled temperature for between 15 and 20 days, the wine is then aged in Slovenian oak casks for at least two years, with a further year’s maturation in bottle to further define its characteristics. Fontanafredda’s Vigna La Rosa Barolo is harmonious, well-rounded and elegant in taste; its very fine and delicate bouquet is reminiscent of faded roses and, with the ageing process, tends to acquire a pronounced earthy style but with a mellow velvety taste.

Since its inception in 1985 the Planeta winery has, in a relatively short space of time, established itself as one of the most dynamic and quality orientated wineries in the whole of Italy.

The fact that the estate is based in the south west corner of Sicily – an island which for so long has been a quality winemaking backwater – makes the achievement all the more remarkable. Run by cousins Fr
