Italy: Central Italy

Italy: Central ItalyThe vineyards which run down the spine of Italy produce an array of wines which are startling in their diversity and offer numerous examples of approachable and competitively priced wines.

Central Italy can easily be described as the heartland of Italian wine production divided physically by the Apennine Mountains.

To the west of the Apennines, lie Tuscany (afforded its own exclusive section here: Tuscan Wine Region), Latium and the landlocked Umbria.

To the east of the Apennines, on the Adriatic side, lie the Marches, Abruzzi and Molise.

It is the white Malvasia grape that reigns in Rome’s region of Latium, prominent in the production of Frascati and also regularly combined with the ubiquitous Trebbiano to produce numerous other white wines of the region.

Orvieto is Umbria's best known wine and although hit and miss does offer one or two notable examples of true quality.

To the east along the Adriatic coast, two indigenous grape varieties stand out: the white Verdicchio grape, prevalent in the Marches, and the red Montepulciano grape, which originated in Abruzzi but is widely planted in Marches and Molise.

The Montepulciano grape can be remarkable on its own, as exemplified by the Rosso Conero DOCG in the Marches and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, DOCG in Abbruzzi. But it also has a natural affinity for blending as Umani Ronchi's Pelago pays testimony to.

The white Verdicchio grape has undergone a revolution in the Marches Castelli di Jesi DOC zone, where it has surpassed its long-time reputation as a tasty fish wine to stand among the noblest native white grape varieties of Italy.

Sicily

Since its inception in 1985 the Planeta winery has, in a relatively short space of time, established itself as one of the most dynamic and quality orientated wineries in the whole of Italy.

The fact that the estate is based in the south west corner of Sicily – an island which for so long has been a quality winemaking backwater – makes the achievement all the more remarkable. Run by cousins Fr
