Separated from the Australian mainland by the narrow Bass Strait Tasmania is the most southerly State of Australia, and is rapidly developing a reputation, both nationally and internationally, for producing high-quality premium wine. With a cool climate that has long, sunny and dry autumns, Tasmania has ideal growing conditions for developing intensely flavoured, aromatic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

As yet there are no specific regions or sub-regions registered by winegrowers; however, this is likely to change in the future, as there are considerable climatic and terroir differences to be found on the island.

It is also interesting to note that Tasmania shares the 42nd parallel of latitude with the northern part of New Zealand's South Island.
