New Zealand: Hawkes Bay

New Zealand: Hawkes BayHawkes Bay is the country's second largest region and has a respected 100 year heritage in wine The varied topography and wide range of soil types, from fertile silty loams to free-draining shingle, produces a considerable range of wine styles in this large region.

There are 22 categories of soil types on the Heretaunga Plains alone, from stones to hard pans to heavy silts. Ripening dates for a single grape variety can vary by as much as three weeks between the hot, shingle soils of the Gimblett Road area to the cool, higher altitude vineyards of central Hawkes Bay.

Chardonnay is the most widely planted grape variety but the long sunshine hours attract a high percentage of later-ripening red grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, as well as the early ripening Pinot Noir.

Trinity Hill 'The Gimblett' 2007 - Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
Bin No. THGIMBLE07
Price: £17.00
Trinity Hill's 2007 vintage of The Gimblett is once again a fine example of how traditional Bordeaux varieties fair in the Gimblett Gravels area of Hawkes Bay. The Gimblett red wine is made from the following red grape varieties: Merlot (51%), Cabernet Sauvignon (17%), Petit Verdot (12%), Cabernet Franc (11%) and Malbec (9%). All the fruit is hand-picked and gently de-stemmed without crushing into closed top tanks for fermentation. Each v ..

Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Homage Syrah 2007 - Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
Bin No. THHOMAGE07
Price: £70.00
The Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Homage Syrah looks certain to become a benchmark for New Zealand Syrah and as a result will become highly collectible and much sought after. Consequently stocks of this wine are limited and we will likely sell out very quickly. Homage Syrah is approximately 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier grapes handpicked from vines planted in 1994. At the winery the grapes were gently de-stemmed and lightly crushed to leave a la ..

The grapes for the, Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Syrah, were all handpicked and gently de-stemmed, before being lightly crushed, to leave a large portion of uncrushed berries. After fermentation the wine was aged in a mixture of new and old French and American oak barriques; malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. After 14 months in oak the wine was blended and bottled without fining but with light filtration. The Gimblett Grave ..

Bin No. THGIMBVI07

The Gimblett Gravels is a unique sub-region of Hawkes Bay, located in the North island of New Zealand. It is the ancient gravel river bed upon which the vineyards are planted that makes the Gimblett Gravels so unique. The Gimblett Gravel range of wines produced by Trinity Hill is depicted by their black label and represents the pinnacle of quality, produced as they are, from the very best parcels and barrel selections. Grapes for the Trini ..

Whitehaven wines was formed in 1993 by Greg and Sue White, and winemaker, Simon Waghorn. Their aim was to establish a winery in Marlborough producing premium quality varietal wines. To achieve this they have brought together a leading New Zealand winemaker, a dedicated group of growers, and a small modern winery facility where top quality fruit can receive the 'hands-on' treatment that i
