France - Burgundy

France - BurgundyBurgundy, or Bourgogne as it is known in France, is an area rich in history and gastronomy covering a vast tract of land in eastern France which encompasses Chablis in the north, close to the vineyards of Champagne, down to Beaujolais in the south in the Rhône département. In between is a myriad of appellations and vineyards which are divided up amongst numerous owners of varying competence and experience. As a region Burgundy arguably produces the world’s greatest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, but as a consumer one has to be careful of the rather lack-lustre wines produced for the benefit of supermarkets which rely solely upon the reputation of the famous Burgundian names, where low-quality wines are sold at highly inflated prices. For this reason the selection of wines we offer to you are based upon our belief that the producers who craft them are the most reliable and skilful winemakers of their own appellation and once you have experienced the undoubting pleasure to be had from them I am sure you will agree with us!

Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2002 - The Grand Cru vineyard 'Clos-Vougeot' covers more than 50ha, but the grapes for this wine are hand picked from a few rows of vines which cover less than 0.5ha and were planted in 1962, Guyot trained and completely organic. This area of the vineyard comprises a thin layer of brown calcerous top soil over a cracked bedrock of limestone which offers excellent drainage. The grapes are left for 4-5 days after harvest to cold macerate, during this time fermentation begins naturally due to the wild yeasts present in the air. After a gentle pneumatic pressing, the wine then ferments in vats for about 15 days, then in 80-100% new French oak barrels where it ages for between 15 and 18 months. Bottling is without fining or filtration, 2300 bottles made every year.Powerfully aromatic, medium to full bodied, packed with red and black fruits, vanilla, spices and a persistent mineral edge that dominates the finish and makes this wine ideal to accompany rich foods.

Nestled at the foot of the three crested 'Roy's Hill', nine miles south west of Hastings in Hawke's Bay is Trinity Hill.

The winery is a partnership between John Hancock, Robert and Robyn Wilson (owners of London's Bleeding Heart and The Don restaurants) and Aucklanders Trevor and Hanne Janes; three founding families hence the name "Trinity Hill".
