France: Burgundy
Burgundy - or Bourgogne as it is known in France - is an area rich in history and gastronomy covering a vast tract of land in eastern France.
This encompasses Chablis in the north - close to the vineyards of Champagne - down to Beaujolais in the south in the Rhône département.
In between is a myriad of appellations and vineyards which are divided up amongst numerous owners of varying competence and experience.
As a region Burgundy arguably produces the world’s greatest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, but as a consumer one has to be careful of the rather lack-lustre wines produced for the benefit of supermarkets which rely solely upon the reputation of the famous Burgundian names, where low-quality wines are sold at highly inflated prices.
For this reason the selection of wines we offer to you are based upon our belief that the producers who craft them are the most reliable and skilful winemakers of their own appellation and once you have experienced the undoubting pleasure to be had from them I am sure you will agree with us! |
