France: Burgundy

France: BurgundyBurgundy - or Bourgogne as it is known in France - is an area rich in history and gastronomy covering a vast tract of land in eastern France.

This encompasses Chablis in the north - close to the vineyards of Champagne - down to Beaujolais in the south in the Rhône département.

In between is a myriad of appellations and vineyards which are divided up amongst numerous owners of varying competence and experience.

As a region Burgundy arguably produces the world’s greatest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, but as a consumer one has to be careful of the rather lack-lustre wines produced for the benefit of supermarkets which rely solely upon the reputation of the famous Burgundian names, where low-quality wines are sold at highly inflated prices.

For this reason the selection of wines we offer to you are based upon our belief that the producers who craft them are the most reliable and skilful winemakers of their own appellation and once you have experienced the undoubting pleasure to be had from them I am sure you will agree with us!

The Mikulski vineyards are meticulously hand tended by François and his team of two helpers throughout the year, and at harvest time the grapes are hand picked at optimum ripeness - sometimes with a few passes, or 'tries' to select only the ripe grapes and to leave those that require further ripening until the next pick. Alcoholic fermentation, malo-lactic and ageing all take place in barrel, underneath François house in his ancient, poorly l ..

Domaine Sérafin Gevrey Chambertin 2005 - Burgundy, France
Bin No. SERAFIN05
Price: £42.00
A perfectionist in the vineyards and cellar, Christian Sérafin takes great care not to manipulate his wines, no filtration or fining is carried out here. Severe cut backs in the vineyard guarantee low yields and a late harvest (he is consistently the last to harvest in Gevrey) ensures ripe structured wines which can cope with abundant use of oak. The resulting Sérafin Gevrey Chambertin is medium dark ruby in colour displaying wonderful aro ..

Since its inception in 1985 the Planeta winery has, in a relatively short space of time, established itself as one of the most dynamic and quality orientated wineries in the whole of Italy.

The fact that the estate is based in the south west corner of Sicily – an island which for so long has been a quality winemaking backwater – makes the achievement all the more remarkable. Run by cousins Fr
