The Pacific-Northwest is perhaps not the first place you would think of when considering purchasing quality wine, however to give you a clue as to its true potential, consider its latitude in relation to the great vineyard sites of Burgundy! Oregon first came to prominence in the late 1970’s when David Lett, owner of The Eyrie Vineyard, entered his 1975 Pinot Noir in a blind wine-tasting competition, organized by Robert Drouhin. Drouhin’s wine won the competition, but Lett’s The Eyrie Vineyard 1975 Pinot Noir came second trouncing another of Drouhin’s wines and many other prestigious Burgundies in the process. Since that day many wine critics have believed it would only be a matter of time before Oregon was producing Pinot Noirs to rival those of Burgundy. In light of Lett’s success, Oregon attracted the likes of Drouhin to set up vineyards and wineries whereby they could further exploit the true potential of the region. Some twenty years on and yes there is fantastic wine produced in Oregon certainly to rival those of Burgundy, but unfortunately most of it stays there!
