Italy - Piemonte

Italy - PiemontePiemonte (Pied Mont), literally 'the foot of the mountains' lies nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps and is arguably the most famous of all Italain wine regions, certainly when you consider all the great wine names that eminate from this region. The region although noted for its beautiful scenery and stunning wines is complemented by its wonderful food and hospitality and of course the world famous Tartufi (white truffle). In 2006 Turin will host the Winter Olympic Games, which are officially sponsored by Fontanafredda, just one of the many outsatnding producers you can find amongst our selection from this wonderful region.

Gaja Rossj-Bass Chardonnay 2005 - This Chardonnay comes from two four acre vineyards planted in 1984: Bass (as it is slightly lower lying) and Rossj, named after Angelo’s younger daughter, Rossana. La Selezioni Fontanafredda Barolo di Serralunga d'Alba 2003 - Piedmont, Italy - The Le Selezioni Fontanafredda Borolo di Serralunga d’Alba, is named after the village where the vineyards are located - part of which are owned by Fontanafredda, while the others are of suppliers who traditionally sell their entire grape production to the company. The wine spends a period of time in large oak casks (70%) and barriques (30%) prior to bottling, which is then followed by a further period of maturation which depends on the vintage; though this never lasts less than six months.Made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, the final Barolo is blood red with ruby highlights; it has a clear-cut, intense nose with overtones of vanilla, spices, withered roses and underbrush. The palate is dry, but soft, full bodied, velvety and well balanced, and is engagingly complex throughout the lengthy finish.

La Spinetta Pin 2003 - La Spinetta’s ‘Pin’ show’s a fresh new world approach to Piemonte wine, with a touch of old world structure. The grape mix for the wine is 25% Barbera, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Nebbiolo. The wine matures in separate barrique up to the June following the harvest. After blending, ageing is completed in new French oak barriques up to 18-20 months. The final stage then is spent in steel tanks before bottling, without being filtered. Realise to the consumer market it’s after three more months that the wine spends in thermo-conditioning rooms. The final wine is shows deep concentration of fruit on the nose which is carried through on to the palate. A degree of spiciness and soft vanilla oak notes offer dry ripe tannins and concentration equal to some of the best.
