France - Bordeaux

France - BordeauxBlessed with an almost-perfect viticultural situation on the west coast of France, Bordeaux is probably the most well-known wine region in France and famous the world over for its enviable château-based classification system. There are approximately 7,000 chateaux spread over an area of some 300,000 acres. It is a fact that the great wines of Bordeaux (to be fair this is only about 1% of those actually producing wines!) set the benchmark for which others aim to aspire - although they perhaps would not openly admit it in public, many a winemaker in the ‘new-world’ ultimately wishes to emulate the top chateaux of Bordeaux in style when crafting their own individual wines!
For lovers of ‘First-Growths’ and the like, I would recommend that you perhaps purchase these wines from one of the respected fine-wine brokers based in London, who will happily cater to your needs and take large sums of money from you! However here at Hic! you will find some little gems which we have had great pleasure in tracking down and equally have great pleasure in selling onto our customers without their need to take out a second-mortgage for just a couple of cases!

Agricola Punica Barrua 2003 - The grapes for this fascinating wine are sourced from two distinctive vineyard sites at Barrua and Narcao. Barrua supplies mostly the Cabernet and Merlot grapes from old bush vines, whilst Narcao is planted mostly with Carignano. The vines are planted in a dense concentration, limiting the yield of each individual plant and increasing the concentration of flavour in the ripe bunches which are all harvested by hand. The whole bunches are destemmed and crushed into open concrete fermenting tanks where they are left for a few days to macerate with the skins before fermentation begins. Ageing is in French Alliers barrique, one third of which are new, one third are second fill and the final third are third fill. Maturation in barrique lasts for 18 months, at which point only the finest barrels are selected for blending. The finished wine is allowed a further ageing period of 12 months in bottle before shipping, ensuring that it is ready to open and enjoy on release. The final wine is deep ruby in colour with hints of violet and an intense, complex, inky bouquet of plum and blackberries, red fruit jam, spices and bay leaves. Velvety in the mouth, it has a mellow structure and sweet tannins which make it effortlessly elegant with a long, spicy liquorice finish.

Amancaya Gran Reserva 2004 - Amancaya is a blend based on the elegant texture of Cabernet Sauvignon (45%) enhanced by the fruit of the indigenous Argentinean Malbec(55%).The conditions in spring and beginning of summer were excellent for the 2004 vintage. The weather in late summer was very hot and dry, with a strong ‘Sonda’ wind blowing from the Andes, which arrested the ripening process on certain plots of Cabernet Sauvignon at lower altitude. The Malbec and the Cabernet Sauvignons located at high altitude were unaffected.Intense purple-red colour. Good fruit, with aromas of ripe red cherries and wild strawberries, underpinned by notes of smoky vanilla from the oak. On the palate, good concentration, fresh but full. Balanced and very attractive with tannins of great quality.
