South Africa

South AfricaSince the end of apartheid the quality of South African wine has blossomed, winemakers were at last given the opportunity to catch up with the rest of the world of wine and finally now some ten years later we are starting to see the real benefits of professional vineyard management. By adopting multiracial democracy the country was able to establish export markets and thus create much needed revenue which has helped to fund the production of even better quality wines. Over the past decade South Africa has caught up with its vinous neighbours and through its vine improvement programme is now at the forefront of viticultural research. Having spent years in the wine producing wilderness and lagged far behind the rest, South Africa is now racing along at the front of the pack as a source of serious, quality wine.

Iona Merlot / Cabernet 2004 - The vineyards are situated exclusively within the Estate, 425m above sea level on the Eastern hills of the Elgin valley. There is a significant influence from the ocean which is 3km away, cooling the vines with a maritime breeze, increasing the hang time of the berries. This fluctuation between warm daytime and cool night-time temperatures promotes the development of highly aromatic compounds. Harvesting is by hand in small parcels, only when the grapes are ripe enough (which often makes these the latest vineyards to be harvested in South Africa!) and then transported to the winery in small crates of around 20kg. Ageing is for 6 months in 25% new barrels, of which 90% are French, before racking into tank for 24 hours as the barrels are cleaned and then the blended wine is returned to the same barrels a further 6 months. After a light filtration the wine is then bottled and aged for a few months before release. The final wine displays all the hallmarks of fine wine making in a New World cool climate. The nose is of ripe plums with some balancing hints of leaves and mint, the palate is medium to full-bodied with an elegant, well structured texture anchoring its plummy, damson and slightly spicy character

Iona Sauvignon Blanc 2007 - Elgin, South Africa - The 2007 vintage for Iona wines was an excellent vintage with a long cool, dry ripening period, unaffected by the January / February heat wave in the Cape; the grapes were harvested over 10 days in mid March in perfect condition. The white wine, Iona 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, was made at Iona’s own cellar by winemaker Niels Verburg; a larger than life character who at 6 ft 5 inches and 17 stone is a good match for Andrew Gunn who grows the grapes. Niels, who was trained in South Africa and has made wine in Chile, Australia, New Zealand and France, also makes his own Luddite Shiraz in the Iona cellar. The final Iona Sauvignon Blanc white wine has a wonderfully aromatic nose showing fine mineral notes, hints of herbs, leaves and a touch of gooseberry fruit. The palate is extremely well balanced with classic sauvignon characters of gooseberry and grapefruit and a long, fine finish.Iona Sauvignon Blanc continues to receive many accolades on the world stage from respected wine commentators such as: Matthew Jukes - “Raise your glasses, because Andrew Gunn, proprietor of Iona, has finally decided to do the right thing and seal his celestial wine with a screwcap. Iona is now complete.”Spurrier's Choice (Steven Spurrier) Decanter, February 2006:

Mulderbosch Chardonnay 2003 - The 2003 Mulderbosch Chardonnay displays pear, citrus and apple fruit flavours on the nose together with oak vanillins, nuts and almonds to give a complex structure. A fresh, crisp wine with a full, creamy texture and well rounded wood integration on the palate. The grapes were hand picked in the early morning to ensure coolness. Forty percent of the wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks and sixty percent was barrel fermented in wood where it underwent partial malolactic fermentation and was left on the lees for eight months. It was then blended and fined before being bottled. The Wine Spectator awarded this wine 92/100.

Thelema Merlot 2004 - Stellenbosch, South Africa - The Thelema Estate Merlot is arguably one of finest expressions of this popular grape variety to be produced in South Africa. The grapes for this wine are sourced from established vines which were planted in 1988 in Hutton soils (decomposed granite) at a density of 3200 vines per hectare. The vineyard practices adopted by Gyles Webb and his team are at the forefront of worldwide viticulture and include vertical hedge trellising, spur pruning to 2 buds every 12cms and supplementary drip irrigation. Harvesting takes place by hand and at the winery, whole bunches are de-stalked, hand sorted and crushed into stainless steel tanks where fermentation takes place. The wine is pressed into 30% new French barriques where ageing takes place for 20 months before bottling. The resulting wine is a deep, brooding purple in colour with some brick red highlights. The nose has pretty red-fruit characters with some hints of spices such as cinnamon and liquorice. On the palate the wine is juicy, broad and ripe, packed with red and black berry fruits, a firm, well integrated oaky structure and a bold, well defined finish which makes it a great food wine. This wine is always favourably reviewed in John Platter’s Guide to South African Wine.
