Spain: Rioja
The three principal regions of Rioja are Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta and Rioja Baja with each area producing its own unique expression of the famous Rioja wine. The vineyards are located along the Ebro Valley, between Haro and Alfaro with vines clustered around many of the Ebro's tributaries, one of which the Oja River, has given its name to the region.
Most Rioja is red wine blended primarily from Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes and sometimes Graciano; however, white wine is also made from the Viura and Malvasia grapes.
Logroño and Haro, the principal towns of Rioja, are both in the Rioja Alta. The wines of Rioja Alta are renowned for their elegance and poise fullness of fruit and concentration. The Rioja Alavesa wines tend to be fuller in body and are much firmer in style than those from Rioja Alta with greater acidity. Rioja Baja is located to the south-east of the region and is the hottest of the three districts. Specialising more in Garnacha than Tempranillo the wines tend to be deep coloured and very alcoholic.
Rioja Crianza wines are aged for one year in oak followed by maturation of one year in bottle before being released for sale. Rioja Reservas must spend a minimum of three years ageing before release, at least one of which should be in oak casks. Finally, Rioja Gran Reservas, which are only produced in the finest vintages, must spend at least five years maturing, of which at least two must be in oak.
