Spain
Spain has a long history of producing world class fine wines, particularly those famous reds from Rioja and more recently Ribera del Duero based upon the wonderful Tempranillo grape. However these are just two small regions amongst many, many more, some of which are vast and in the main produce crap but many regions are equally as good as their more famous counterparts and are now producing some really good and interesting wines. For lovers of white wine the regions of Rueda and Rias Baixas in northern Spain are the areas to watch out for, whilst Penedes is home to some very good reds but particularly the popular sparkling wines labelled Cava. To the south of the country there is also the joy of Spain’s own unique product Sherry, for which we have a super selection for you to choose from. It is however the red wine lover I feel that will benefit most from exploring the joys of Spain, for there is now a whole host of serious red wine producers in many regions. Of these regions particularly noteworthy are Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Priorato, Somontano, La Mancha and Valdepeñas all of which we have selected some of the finest examples coming out of these regions for your enjoyment. Just in case you are a little concerned as to the provenance of some of these wines, Spain employs a quality control and classification system similar to those adopted in France and Italy – referred to as the ‘D.O System’ – this guarantees that in the classified regions, the origin and quality of the grapes as well as the method used to produce the wines is strictly adhered to, something thankfully that the ‘Old World’ wine producers still retain over many wine producers in the ‘New World’!
