Italy - Tuscany

Italy - TuscanyTuscan Wine! - Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano may, or may not, all conjure up an idyllic scene of long established aristocrats enjoying the spoils of perfectly manicured olive groves and rolling terracotta vineyards. However don’t be mislead by this serenely beautiful image, for its creation demands a serious amount of hard work, thought and foresight. Thankfully there is a band of Tuscan producers who are not ones to relax into the alluring comfort of their time-honoured heritage, in fact they have realised that they must now work harder than ever before in order for them to maintain the wonderful reputation generations of wine production have brought them. Collectively, their aim is to produce the very finest wines they possibly can, whether from local or from international grape varieties, yet maintain the true Tuscan character of the wines. Huge investment and open mindedness coupled together with closer relations in foreign markets have helped these producers understand the markets they are catering for and thus resulted in a dramatic improvement in the quality and range of wines being produced. This is a fantastic region for quality wines and hopefully the producers and their wines we offer will help to convince you likewise!

Barone Ricasoli Casalferro 2003 - Tuscany, Italy - Alongside the estate’s top wine, Barone Ricasoli also produce “wines of the territory” a range of wines which express the potential of the Brolio vineyards in a more innovative winemaking style. Casalferro is not made to an exact formula but is produced each year in a style which best displays the characteristics of Sangiovese combined with other noble grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2003 Casalferro, from Ricasoli, was made from a blend of 75% Sangiovese grapes and 25% Merlot grapes; matured in barrique for 16-18 months, followed by a period of 4 months bottle ageing. This is a rich Super-Tuscan red with cherry and plum aromas, medium to full-bodied, the summer berry fruit flavours are balanced with fine tannins and a long sweet, fruit finish. In the 2006 Gambero Rosso Ricasoli Casalferro was awarded

Brolio Chianti Classico 2005 - Ricasoli’s own Sangiovese vineyards in Gaiole were the source of fruit for this wine, with the vineyards reaching nearly 500 meters above sea-level in some parts. The wine spends 12 months in French Oak barrels and barriques resulting in a wine that is bright ruby red in colour with rich flavours of mature fruit. Aromas of violets and spice lead on to a palate that is elegant and refined thanks to good acidity and well balanced tannins. The long lasting flavour sensation is voluptuous and velvety.

Castello di Brolio Chianti Classico 2003 - Tuscany, Italy - The Chianti Classico is Castello di Brolio’s top wine; embodying the refinement and elegant characteristics associated with the Brolio tradition. First produced in the spectacular vintage of 1997, this is much more than merely a traditional Riserva; following the French model of classification, it could be considered a ‘grand vin’. Made from a selection of the best grapes available, the blend is 95% Sangiovese, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Merlot which are aged in barrique for about 18 months, with further age in bottle before its release.Concentrated and deep ruby in colour on the nose this wine has a herbal complexity with leather and tar notes. On the palate there is plenty of rich red berry fruit flavours with a lovely savoury edge. Firm and tannic this is definitely a wine for the long-haul, yet will drink happily now with roast rack of lamb, grilled steaks or braised pork as examples. This Castello di Brolio Chianti Classico was awarded a Tre Bicchieri in the Gamberro Rosso, the ultimate accolade in Italy's leading wine guide, which is published annualy.Demand for this wine is always high and as such stock is limited.

Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2000 - This Riserva of Brunello is made only in the best vintages from Barbi's oldest vineyards in Montalcino. The ageing in barrel and in bottle is longer then the one for the normal Brunello, thus the wine has a deeper concentration and a wider complexity of aromas. Harvesting is done by hand and ageing is for four years in large Slovenian oak casks and matured in bottle for a further year before release. The final wine is brick red in colour with earthy brown edges. The nose is pronounced and complex, offering an entertaining array of red and black berry fruits, spices and oaky aromas. The palate is medium to full bodied with a richly complex middle and an everlasting, elegant finish. The tannic structure that dominated the wine in its youth is beginning to mellow and allow mature, secondary characteristics to show. A stunning wine with enormous appeal.
