New Zealand

New ZealandThe wines of Dog Point Vineyards have proved a real success for us in the past twelve months, especially amongst those looking for a realistic alternative to the over-priced Cloudy Bay wines. The long established success of Isabel Estate continues as does the continued popularity of one of my personal favourites Seresin Estate. Whilst the range is still dominated by the Sauvignon Blanc grape, we are looking to improve upon this with additions of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay to the list as well as some excellent Pinot Noir from Peregrine Wines in Central Otago. Moving further west but still staying in the ‘South Island’ is the range we offer from Tim and Judy Finn at Neudorf Vineyards in Moutere, Nelson. Nearly 30 years on from the planting of their first vines, the Finn’s have gained an international reputation for producing some of New Zealand’s finest and most sought after wines. Our allocations for these wines are limited and demand is always high, as a result we only have small quantities available through the year, which are sold on a first come first served basis. Due to the number of requests we have had from our customers, (to make this range available online) this year we have added the excellent Mansion House Bay wines. New for 2007 in addition to their sought after Sauvignon Blanc is a great Pinot Gris and Riesling. Well worth a try!

Isabel Estate Chardonnay 2003 - Wine notes as supplied by the Isabel Estate archive;ViticultureThe chardonnay block from which this wine came managed to escape the frost, so we worked hard in the vineyard to maximise the flavour spectrum. The vines were cropped and shoot-thinned, as well as leaf- plucked, to give the fruit sun exposure and intensity. We sought a combination of citrus and grapefruit characters, as well as a touch of honey and tropical notes.OenologyThe season dictated the winemaking approach with the 2003 Isabel Chardonnay. We are seeking a wine with more restraint and delicacy that will be more long lived and better suited to accompany food. Where previous vintages have had close to 100% malo-lactic fermentation, this wine underwent around 20%. This retained more of the fresh mineral acidity and lengthened the palate. As the wine had loads of intensity, we tried to restrain any single dominant character, in order to produce a wine that will evolve both in the mouth and in the glass. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and barrel fermented with a combination of indigenous and inoculated yeast strains. A number of different coopers were used of which approximately 20% were new French barriques. After regular batonage, the wine was taken out of oak after 10 months, and prepared for bottling.Wine Maker's CommentsIntense lifted nose of lemon peel, pink grapefruit, white peach and nuts. Fresh and clean on the palate, there is a lovely balance between the fine acidity and the creamy, lees derived viscosity. The flavours burst forth on the palate with a combination of citrus, tropical and almond, with a touch of cedar on the lengthy finish. The wine opens up nicely in the glass, and should age gracefully, courtesy of the retained acid and restrained winemaking input. Well suited to any number of foods, or enjoy on its own with friends.

Isabel Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2004 - Wine Notes as supplied from the Isabel Estate archive:ViticultureA quite cool early spring lead to a very even and complete flowering and fruit set. As December rolled through, temperatures rose and canopies quickly filled out. February arrived and the temperatures dropped which lead to an extended ripening season. Leaf plucking to increase sun exposure into the fruit zone was done in early January. This combination allowed us to bring in some early fruit with bright zingy flavours and then later fruit with more developed body.OenologyThe ‘04 vintage was punctuated with rain, so some fruit came in early and other fruit distinctly later. The early fruit had typical Marlborough cut-grass freshness, and zingy acidity. The later fruit was more restrained, with stone fruits and honey. All was settled over night and fermented clean and cool to retain freshness. Around 10% was barrel fermented, and another 5% aged on lees in oak, giving us greater length and mouthfeel.Wine Maker's CommentsA subtle, refined sauvignon, the nose displays lemon, honey and fresh cut grass. The palate is a combination of crisp acid and soft viscosity derived from lees time and in oak. The flavours are a combination of stone fruits, citrus and classic Marlborough herbaceous notes. There is a touch of spice on the palate which is quite dense throughout, and a touch of sweetness to offset the acid. This wine will go well with richly flavoured dishes such as a red Thai curry or marinated smoked mussels.
