Armagnac Castarède XO - 70cl - The House of Castarède, founded in 1832, is the oldest of all Armagnac trading houses. Its prestige is based on its exceptional collection of vintage Armagnacs, which contains more than forty authenticated vintages - the oldest dating back from 1881 - crafted from the best products of the Bas Armagnac region and matured in cellars more than a hundred years old.Today, Florence Castarède is responsible for this family heritage, combining ancient know-how acquired over six generations with new policy initiatives. An XO must be at least 6 years old, however, the Castarède Armagnac XO is between 15 - 20 years of age. It has a clear coppery colour with animal aromas like fur and leather. This bas Armagnac has a smooth attack combined with pleasant flavours of ripe prunes and spices - it is very well balanced. Palacios Remondo La Montesa 2005 - Rioja, Spain - The vineyards at Palacios Remondo are all organically farmed and the wines produced are bottled unfiltered and unfined. The La Montessa Rioja wine from Palacios Remondo is made from a blend of 40% Garnacha, 40% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo and 10% Graciano grapes all of which are sourced from the family’s own vineyards in the La Rioja at approximately 550m above sea-level. The vines are approaching twenty years in age now and are yielding some fantastic fruit. Green harvesting techniques are adopted to maximise the fruits potential and all harvesting is done by hand. The wine is aged for 14 months in barrels of which 75% is French oak with the remaining 25% American oak - Only 10% of the oak used is new, with the remaining 90% split equally between, one, two and three year old wood. The final wine is bottled without filtration and results in a silky well balanced wine with a wonderful purity of fruit. This Rioja has proved to be one of our most popular wines from Spain.

Gaja Rossj-Bass Chardonnay 2005 - This Chardonnay comes from two four acre vineyards planted in 1984: Bass (as it is slightly lower lying) and Rossj, named after Angelo’s younger daughter, Rossana. From 1991 vintage, grapes from a twelve acre vineyard in Serralunga have also been added to the blend. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel, and the wine is then transferred to barriques for the malolactic fermentation and ageing. The wine is wonderfully rich and honeyed, with fine mineral complexity and terrific length.

Xisto 2003 - Xisto is a blend of 60% Touriga Nacional, 25% Tinta Roriz and 15% Touriga Francesa and combines the unique spicy character of the Douro with the finesse of a Cru Classé Bordeaux. The wine has a very deep (almost opaque) red colour and a nose of violets, cassis and black cherries. On the palate the Xisto is remarkably elegant with a classic balance of fine ripe tannins and intense mouth filling fruit. Although delicious now, the 2003 Xisto will age well for the next 10 to 15 years.
